Muhammad Izz al-Din was given the name Izz al-Rijal, the honour of men, because he was known for helping the weak and those in distress. He was a sharif whose lineage goes back to Sayyiduna al-Hasan, and he is buried in his mosque in Tanta. The present mosque was built in 1895 in the reign of Khedive Abbas Hilmi II and is a registered monument. It stands in the old quarter a few minutes from the mosque of Sayyid Ahmad al-Badawi, and it has been closed for restoration in recent years.
