Sharif Marzuq ibn Abdullah al-Ghazi was born in Makkah to a family descended from Sayyiduna al-Husayn. He came to Cairo and then to Tanta, where he made this old mosque his home and stayed in it until he passed away in 568 AH, long before the arrival of Sayyid Ahmad al-Badawi. The mosque, one of the oldest in Tanta, has carried his name ever since. It was rebuilt in the time of King Fuad and renewed again in 2018, and his shrine is inside. It stands in a lane a short walk from the Badawi mosque.
