Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Walid al-Turtushi was born in Tortosa in al-Andalus in 451 AH and travelled east to study in Basra, Syria and Jerusalem before settling in Alexandria. There he married, turned his house into a school and taught Maliki fiqh to students who came from across the Maghreb and al-Andalus, until his passing in 520 AH (1126). His best-known work is Siraj al-Muluk, a book of counsel for rulers. His tomb is the oldest shrine in Alexandria and lies behind the qibla wall of his mosque in the al-Balqatriyya quarter near the Western Harbour, beside the tomb of his student Muhammad al-As'ad. The mosque is a registered monument.
