The Alexandria National Museum opened in 2003 in an Italian-style palace of the 1920s on al-Horreya Road, a building that once served as the American consulate. Its collection of some 1,800 objects tells the story of the city from the pharaonic age through the Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods to modern times. The Islamic section holds coins, glass, ceramics and objects of daily life, and the museum also shows finds recovered from the waters of the harbour. It is a short walk from the Shallalat Gardens and the Museum of Fine Arts.
