The old fortress of Velika Kladuša stands on a hill above the town, close to the border with Croatia. Like the other castles of the Bosnian Krajina, it lay on the Ottoman frontier and was a garrison fort for centuries. The walls and towers can be seen from the town and explored on foot. Facilities are minimal and the approach road is narrow with little parking, so it is best visited on foot from the town centre.
