About Hajji Alija Masjid, Počitelj

The Hajji Alija Masjid is the main mosque of Počitelj, built in 1563 by Hajji Alija, son of Musa. It was repaired in the seventeenth century by Šišman Ibrahim Pasha, and local people have since also called it after him. It is a domed stone mosque, admired for its harmonious proportions and its unusual acoustics. The mosque was badly damaged in 1993 and restored in 2002, and it is part of the protected Ottoman town of Počitelj. It stands on the path that climbs from the river to the fortress; a small fee is charged for visitors, and women are asked to cover their hair.
