About City Steward's Bridge (Šeher-Ćehaja Ćuprija)

Šeher-Ćehaja Ćuprija crosses the Miljacka at the eastern end of Baščaršija, beside the City Hall. A chronogram records that it was built in 994 AH, which is 1585-86, and its name means the bridge of the city steward (šeher-ćehaja), the official who looked after the city's affairs. It is one of the thirteen bridges built in Sarajevo during Ottoman rule, made of tufa and limestone with graceful arches. Floods damaged it several times over the following centuries and it was repaired each time. It is now a protected national monument and a pleasant crossing on walks between the old town and the Alifakovac and Bistrik quarters.
