Alifakovac is one of the oldest Muslim graveyards in Sarajevo, in use since the Ottoman foundation of the city in the fifteenth century. It is named after Ali-Fakih, a jurist who was one of the witnesses to Isa Bey Ishaković's founding endowment of Sarajevo in 1462. The graveyard climbs the hillside just east of Baščaršija, and its slender stone headstones (nišani), many leaning with age, are carved with turbans and inscriptions. Scholars, officials, travellers who passed away in the city and ordinary townspeople lie here side by side. It is a quiet place for ziyara, with one of the finest views over the old town and the Miljacka valley.
