Thula Fortress, also known as Husn al-Ghurab, crowns the mountain above the walled town of Thula, west of Amran. It has been fortified since pre-Islamic times, and in the sixteenth century it was a stronghold of Imam Sharaf al-Din and his son al-Mutahhar. A long stairway cut into the rock leads up from the town to the fortress, past rock-cut cisterns, grain stores and gateways, with views over Thula and the plain below.
