The Great Mosque of al-Rawda was built in the seventeenth century by Imam Ahmad ibn al-Qasim in al-Rawda, the garden town north of Sana'a that was long a summer retreat for the city's families. It is one of the finest mosques of the period in Yemen. The mosque has a wide courtyard surrounded by arcades with carved stucco decoration, a tall minaret decorated in brick and plaster, and a prayer hall with painted ceilings and coloured glass windows. Its old ablution pools and gardens lie beside it.
