The Kathiri Palace, also called Seiyun Palace, was the seat of the Kathiri sultans, who ruled from Seiyun over much of Wadi Hadramawt. The first palace on the site, with a mosque beside it, is said to have been built in 1584 by Sultan Badr Abu Tuwayriq, and it was rebuilt and enlarged in the twentieth century into its present form. The gleaming white palace of seven storeys is one of the largest mud-brick buildings in the world and dominates the centre of Seiyun. It now houses a museum of the history and heritage of Hadramawt, and is usually open in the mornings.
