The Great Mosque of al-Shihr is the oldest mosque of the coastal city, and local tradition holds that it was founded in the tenth year of the Hijra, after the delegation from al-Shihr returned from Madinah having accepted Islam. It has been renovated and enlarged many times. The mosque has a tall green and white minaret, a domed prayer hall and a long facade with blue doors, and stands in the old centre of al-Shihr, east of Mukalla.
