Al-Bakiriyya was built in 1005 AH by the Ottoman governor Hasan Pasha as a madrasa and mosque. It takes its name from Bakir, a servant of Hasan Pasha who fell from his horse at the opening ceremony and was buried on its eastern side under a dome. The mosque is built in the early Ottoman style with a large high dome over the prayer hall, smaller domes, a courtyard and a tall decorated minaret, and stands in the eastern part of the Old City of Sana'a.
