The Friday market of Bayt al-Faqih is one of the largest weekly markets of the Tihama and has been held for centuries. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Bayt al-Faqih was the main market of the Yemeni coffee trade, where merchants bought coffee for shipping through Mokha and other ports. On Fridays traders and farmers come from the surrounding villages to sell livestock, produce, pottery, cloth and household goods, and the market fills the streets around its permanent shops.
