About Grave of Ahmad al-Saruji

The Saruji Mosque stands on al-Mazaz Street in al-Shaghour, just outside the Bab al-Saghir gate of Old Damascus, and holds the grave of the Sufi shaykh Ahmad ibn Sulayman al-Saruji, a figure long held dear by the people of Damascus. The mosque is believed to date back to the Mamluk period. It is a small neighbourhood mosque with an arched doorway in patterned stone, and a sign above the entrance names it Jami' al-Saruji. The building was renovated in 1356 AH (1937). It is a short walk from the Bab al-Saghir gate and cemetery, so it is easily visited together with the graves of the Ahl al-Bayt and the Companions there.
