Dar al-Hadith al-Nuriyyah was founded by Nur al-Din Zangi in the twelfth century as one of the first schools in the Muslim world devoted specifically to the study of hadith. Nur al-Din built it for the great historian and hadith scholar Ibn Asakir, who taught here. It stands in the old city of Damascus close to Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah and the other medieval schools south-west of the Umayyad Mosque, and it reflects the central place of hadith learning in the city's history.
