This mosque in the south-west of Damascus is named after Shaykh Abd al-Karim al-Rifa'i (1904 to 1973), one of the most influential Damascene scholars of the twentieth century. He founded the movement known as the Zayd group, which gathered young people in the mosques for the study of the Qur'an, Islamic law and good character, and trained a generation of preachers and teachers. The mosque continues his work as a place of prayer, Qur'an teaching and religious lessons, and it remains closely linked to his family and students.
