The cemetery of the Takiyyah Sulaymaniyyah in central Damascus holds graves of members of the Ottoman royal family. The best known is Sultan Mehmed VI Vahideddin, the last Ottoman sultan, who went into exile when the sultanate was abolished in 1922 and passed away in San Remo, Italy, in 1926. As he could not be buried in Turkey, his body was brought to Damascus and laid to rest here. The graves stand in a small enclosure within the grounds of the Takiyyah, a quiet reminder of the end of six centuries of Ottoman rule and of Damascus's place as a city of refuge for the exiled dynasty.
