Taqi al-Din Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah was born in Harran in 661 AH and came to Damascus as a child with his family, fleeing the Mongol advance. He became one of the most influential and debated Hanbali scholars in Islamic history, writing extensively on belief, law and Qur'anic interpretation, and he also urged the people of Damascus to resist the Mongol invasions of his time. He was imprisoned several times for his views and passed away in the Citadel of Damascus in 728 AH. A vast crowd attended his funeral, and he was buried in the Sufiyyah cemetery, where his simple grave survives in a small enclosure beside that of Ibn Kathir.
