Maqbarat al-Sufiyyah, the Cemetery of the Sufis, was one of the great medieval cemeteries of Damascus, lying west of the old city. Over the centuries it received many of the city's scholars, among them Ibn al-Salah, the master of the sciences of hadith, Ibn Taymiyyah and his student Ibn Kathir. Most of the old cemetery was built over in the twentieth century, and only a small section with these famous graves survives, surrounded by the modern city. It is visited above all by students and readers of the scholars buried here.
