Al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd al-Thaqafi rose in Kufa in 66 AH to take revenge on those who had killed Sayyiduna al-Husayn at Karbala, and many of the killers, including Umar ibn Sa'd, were put to death, while Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was killed by his army at the river Khazir. He was defeated and killed by Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr in 67 AH. His grave lies within the precinct of the Great Mosque of Kufa, close to the shrine of Muslim ibn Aqil.
