Abu Mahfuz Ma'ruf ibn Firuz al-Karkhi, who died in 200 AH (815), was one of the first great Sufis of Baghdad and the teacher of Sari al-Saqati. Tradition says he became Muslim at the hands of Imam Ali al-Rida. Baghdadis have long visited his grave to pray, and the scholar Ibrahim al-Harbi called it a proven remedy. His grave is in the Karkh cemetery that carries his name, on the west side of the city, under a mosque with a tall brick minaret from the late Abbasid period. The domed tomb popularly called Sitt Zubayda's is in the same cemetery.
