Zabadani is a mountain town and summer resort about 45 km north-west of Damascus, at an altitude of around 1,175 metres in the Anti-Lebanon range. It overlooks the fertile Zabadani plain, known for its orchards of apples, cherries, plums, peaches and pears. Near the town is the spring of the Barada, the river that waters Damascus and its Ghouta, with restaurants beside the water, and the neighbouring resort of Bloudan lies in the hills above. The cool air and green valleys have long made Zabadani a favourite escape from the summer heat of the capital.
