At the Maysalun pass in the Anti-Lebanon mountains, about 25 kilometres west of Damascus, the forces of the short-lived Arab Kingdom of Syria fought the French army on 24 July 1920. The war minister Yusuf al-Azma led the heavily outnumbered defenders and was killed in the battle, and the French entered Damascus the next day. His tomb stands on the battlefield and is a national memorial, visited by Syrians every year on the anniversary of the battle.
