Mount Qasioun is the mountain that rises over Damascus to the north-west, reaching about 1,150 metres. The old quarter of al-Salihiyya grew up at its foot, and its slopes hold some of the most visited sacred sites of the city, including the Maqam al-Arba'in and the Cave of Blood. From the roads along its upper slopes there are sweeping views over the whole city, especially at night, and the mountain has long been a place for families to gather in the evenings. The madrasas of al-Salihiyya and the mosque and grave of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi lie below.
