The shrine of Nabi Ibrahim in Barzeh stands on the lower slopes of Mount Qasiyun on the northern edge of Damascus. It is a small mosque with a narrow, deep cave inside. One tradition says Nabi Ibrahim sheltered here for months on his journey from Harran to Palestine, and another holds that he was born in this cave. For centuries the people of Damascus and the Ghouta came here in great numbers for a yearly festival known as the Friday of Barzeh, with displays of horsemanship and shared meals. It remains a place of prayer and visitation.
