Souq al-Bzouriyah is one of the oldest markets of Damascus, running south from the Umayyad Mosque towards Straight Street. Its name comes from the seeds and spices (bzour) sold there, and it has long been the city's market for spices, herbs, sweets, soaps and perfumes. The covered market is lined with small shops, and along it stand some of the finest buildings of the old city: Khan As'ad Pasha, the largest caravanserai of Damascus, and Hammam Nur al-Din, the old bathhouse still in use. The Azem Palace is a few steps away, and the market is at its liveliest before Ramadan and the Eids.
