Khan As'ad Pasha is the largest caravanserai in the old city of Damascus, covering about 2,500 square metres along Souq al-Buzuriyyah. It was built in 1751–52 by As'ad Pasha al-Azm, the Ottoman governor of Damascus who also built the nearby Azem Palace. Merchants and caravans from Baghdad, Aleppo and beyond stayed and traded here. Its courtyard, roofed with domes and built in bands of black and white stone, is one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture in the city, and it is open to visitors.
