Palmyra Museum opened in 1961 on the edge of the modern town of Tadmur, beside the ancient city of Palmyra. Its collections cover the history of the oasis from prehistoric times, including finds from the nearby Douara cave, through the great age of Palmyra as a caravan city. The museum has been under restoration in recent years. It is a short walk from the ruins of the ancient city, with Palmyra Castle (Fakhr al-Din) on the hill above.
