The Izziyya Madrasa is an Ayyubid school of the thirteenth century founded by the emir Izz al-Din Aybak al-Mu'azzami, a commander of the Ayyubid ruler al-Mu'azzam Isa. It was known as al-Izziyya al-Barraniyya, the outer Izziyya, to distinguish it from his madrasa inside the walls. The madrasa stands on the old road from the city to al-Salihiyya, in the district where several Ayyubid and Mamluk madrasas were built at the foot of Mount Qasioun. Its stone hall and tomb are kept as a heritage monument, and the Sharkasiyya and Rukniyya madrasas are nearby.
