The Yalbugha Mosque stands on the bank of the Barada near al-Marjah square, on the site of a great Mamluk mosque built in 1346–47 by the amir Yalbugha al-Yahyawi. The old mosque was later used as a factory in the nineteenth century and was demolished in 1974. A large new mosque was built on the same site and opened in 2014, keeping the historic name. It is now one of the biggest mosques in central Damascus.
