The Farrukhshahiyya Mosque is what remains of an Ayyubid madrasa founded in 579 AH (1183) by Khatlakhayr bint Ibrahim, wife of Shahanshah ibn Ayyub, brother of Salah al-Din. She endowed it for the Shafi'i school in the name of her son Farrukhshah, ruler of Baalbek, and the domed tomb beside it gave the building its other name, Mosque and Maqam of Farrukhshah. The small mosque stands at the start of the Four Seasons boulevard in central Damascus, on a rise overlooking the Sulaymaniyya Takiyya across the river. It is enclosed by an iron fence and is opened at prayer times. The Takiyya and the National Museum are a short walk away.
