The Balban al-Mahmudi Mosque was founded in 815 AH (1412) by the Mamluk emir Balban al-Mahmudi, atabeg of the army in Damascus, as a mosque and tomb. It was renewed in 893 AH by the treasury official Uthman Agha al-Tawashi, who was buried in a corner of it. An inscribed panel over the entrance records its history. The mosque stands on the Saruja road north-west of the old city walls, in the quarter that grew up outside the walls in the Mamluk period. It is a small building of local stone and is still used for prayer. The Ward Mosque and Souq Saruja are a short walk away.
