When the Muslims arrived in Madinah, good drinking water was scarce, and the sweetest well, Ruma, belonged to a man who sold its water. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ encouraged the Companions to buy it for the community, and Uthman ibn Affan purchased it and gave it freely for everyone to use. It has been known ever since as the Well of Uthman. The well lies in the north-west of Madinah near Wadi al-Aqiq, in the middle of a large date farm that is said to be managed still as an endowment in Uthman's name, its income spent on charitable causes. The site is generally not open to the public, but it remains a much-loved example of charity that continues to benefit people centuries later.
