In 5 AH a great alliance of the Quraysh and other tribes, some ten thousand strong, marched on Madinah. On the advice of Salman al-Farsi, the Muslims dug a trench (khandaq) across the open northern approach to the city, and Nabi Muhammad ﷺ camped with about three thousand Companions with Mount Sal' at their backs and the trench in front. The siege lasted nearly a month in bitter cold, until a fierce wind broke up the enemy camp and the alliance withdrew. On the western slopes of Sal' stand the mosques known as the Seven Mosques, linked with the positions of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions during the siege, together with the cave where he is said to have spent nights. The mountain rises in the north-west of the city, a short drive from Masjid al-Nabawi.
