About Dar al-Qada' of Umar ibn al-Khattab

Between Bab al-Rahmah and Bab al-Salam, on the western side of the early mosque, stood a house of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar asked that it be sold after his passing to settle his debts, and Mu'awiyah bought it, so that it became known as Dar Qada' al-Dayn, the house that paid the debt. It was later taken into the mosque courtyard, and in the following centuries the same plot held a zawiya built by Sultan Ghiyath al-Din of Bengal in 814 AH and then the madrasa and zawiya of the Mamluk Sultan Qaytbay, which in turn served as the court of the judges of Madinah. In the Ottoman period Sultan Abdülmecid built a madrasa containing a great library on the ruins of the Qaytbay madrasa, and Sultan Abdülaziz renewed it in 1287 AH. These buildings were taken down when Masjid al-Nabawi was enlarged in the twentieth century, and the site lies about 75 metres north-west of the Green Dome, within the mosque and its courtyards.
