The Mahmudiyyah Madrasa was built in Madinah by the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808-1839), who sent builders for the work around 1238 AH (1823). It taught the Islamic sciences to students from Madinah and abroad, and its library, endowed with books on tafsir, hadith, fiqh, history and literature, held more than 4,500 volumes in the early twentieth century, the largest collection in Ibrahim Rifat Pasha's list of the libraries of Madinah. The madrasa stood beside Masjid al-Nabawi near Bab al-Salam and was taken down when the mosque was enlarged in the twentieth century. Its site lies about 75 metres north-west of the Green Dome, within the mosque and its courtyards.
