This stepwell was built in the reign of the emperor Akbar by Sher Khan, a man of means who settled in the town that bears his name, on the advice of a local dervish. A plaque recording his endowment was moved to the Lahore Museum in 1971 for safekeeping. Over the steps stands a caravanserai-like building with a central domed chamber surrounded by eight rooms, a Mughal plan known as hasht bihisht, which served travellers on the road between Lahore and Kashmir. Sher Khan's mosque stands just to the south-east, and the shrine of Waris Shah is nearby.
