Abu al-Hasan Sari al-Saqati, who passed away in Baghdad in 253 AH, was one of the great early Sufi masters of Baghdad. A spice merchant of the market, he was a student of Ma'ruf al-Karkhi and the maternal uncle and teacher of al-Junayd, and the early biographers record many of his sayings on sincerity and patience. He is buried in the old Shuniziyya cemetery in Karkh, where his grave lies beside that of al-Junayd under a shared shrine. The graves of Dhul-Nun, Ibrahim al-Khawwas, Bahlul and the Nabi Yusha shrine are in the same burial ground, near the Sheikh Ma'ruf mosque.
