Al-Sayyid al-Shaykh ʿAbdullāh al-ʿAssāf al-ʿAythāwī al-Rifāʿī al-Ḥusaynī — known by the name Mashyūḥ and honoured with the title Nāṭūr al-ʿIrāq , "the Guardian of Iraq" — was a saintly figure of the Rifāʿī Sufi tradition, remembered for his piety, spiritual standing, and the many karāmāt (gifts of grace) attributed to him in popular devotion. He is venerated as a friend of God ( walī ) whose blessing and protection were sought across the region, and the title by which he is remembered reflects the role he is believed to have held as a spiritual watchman over the land. He was a descendant of the Ahl al-Bayt through the Ḥusaynī line, belonging to the Sādāt al-Bū ʿAytha al-Ḥusayniyya, the family from which the ʿAythāwī sayyids take their name. His spiritual lineage connected him to the great Sufi master Aḥmad al-Rifāʿī al-Kabīr, the founder of the Rifāʿī order, and the devotional life around his memory has long been bound up with the annual pilgrimage caravans that travel from Baghdad to the maqām of al-Rifāʿī in the Jazira region — caravans that have historically set out under his name. He is honoured today through a continuing tradition of devotional gatherings, madīḥ (praise poetry), and visitation, carried on by his descendants, among them al-Shaykh Ḍārī Āl Mashyūḥ al-ʿAythāwī, a noted reciter of devotional praise in his own right. His maqām lies in Baghdad, in the area associated with the Bū ʿAytha community, and remains a focus of local Rifāʿī devotion. One honest note: the surviving record of his life is largely preserved through family genealogy and the oral and devotional tradition of his followers rather than detailed historical documentation, so precise dates and biographical particulars are scarce — what endures is the living memory of a venerated Rifāʿī sayyid and the devotional practice that surrounds his grave.
