Shaykh Muhammad Amin al-Kawaz was a spiritual teacher associated with the Shadhili path in sixteenth-century Basra. He taught members of the prominent Al Bash Aʿyan al-ʿAbbasi family, who became closely connected with the mosque and the continuation of Shadhili teaching in the city. He died in Basra around 1545–1546 CE and was buried beside the historic mosque that later became widely known by his name. His grave is preserved beneath a decorated dome on the northern side of Al-Kawaz Mosque, within a small burial area adjoining the mosque. A room nearby was traditionally associated with seven members of the Al Bash Aʿyan family who studied under him. The mosque also historically provided accommodation for travellers, strangers and the poor, reflecting its former role as both a place of worship and a centre of spiritual hospitality. Al-Kawaz Mosque is one of the notable historic mosques of Basra’s al-Mishraq quarter. Its early structure was built from reeds around 1514 CE and reconstructed in stone around 1523 CE. The shrine dome was later developed and restored, while the mosque became distinguished by its decorated blue dome and tiled minaret.
