The Great Mosque of Basra is one of the most prominent mosques in the centre of the city, also known as the Yusuf al-Hassan mosque after the imam who led its prayers and gave its sermons for many years. It is a modern building and a city landmark, able to hold more than 2,000 worshippers. The mosque is open at the times of prayer. It stands on the edge of Old Basra, about 100 m from the shrine of Ali ibn Yaqtin and close to the Shanashil houses and the old market.
