Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Uthman al-Amri was the son of Uthman ibn Sa'id and, in Shia tradition, the second deputy of Imam al-Mahdi, a role he held for about forty years until he passed away in 305 AH. He is often called al-Khilani after the place of his burial. His shrine is the al-Khilani mosque on Jumhuriya Street in Rusafa, which gives its name to the surrounding Khilani Square. The mosque has a large dome, a single minaret and a wide courtyard, with the grave under a metal enclosure in one corner and a library of old books.
