This mosque was first known as the mosque of Shaykh Muhammad al-Abit, a well-known figure of the royal period who is buried in it. After 1952 it was enlarged and renamed after Omar Makram, the scholar and leader of Cairo's notables in the early nineteenth century. It stands on the edge of Tahrir Square near the Egyptian Museum, and it is where funeral prayers for many well-known Egyptians are held.
