Shams al-Din al-Hanafi, known to Cairenes as Sultan al-Hanafi, was a Shadhili master of the ninth century AH and a jurist of the Hanafi school, from which his name comes. Scholars, amirs and ordinary people sat in his zawiya, and al-Sha'rani recorded many of his sayings. He passed away in 847 AH. His mosque, rebuilt in the nineteenth century on the site of his zawiya, stands in the Sayyida Zaynab district on the street that carries his name. The tomb of Salih Abu Hadid is a few steps away.
