The Great Sphinx of Giza is a lion with a human head carved from the limestone bedrock of the Giza plateau, usually dated to the reign of King Khafre around 2500 BC. It is about 73 metres long and one of the largest statues of the ancient world. It lies below the pyramid of Khafre, beside his valley temple, and faces east towards the Nile valley. The best view is from the terrace near the valley temple at the eastern end of the plateau.
