Izz al-Din ibn Abd al-Salam, called 'the Sultan of the Scholars', was a Shafi'i jurist from Damascus famous for standing up to rulers. He moved to Cairo, where he taught and gave rulings during the Crusader and Mongol wars, and passed away in 660 AH. His grave lies in the al-Basatin part of the Qarafa, beyond the mosque of Imam al-Layth.
