Mahmud Shaltut served as Shaykh al-Azhar from 1958 until he passed away in 1963. A noted jurist and commentator on the Qur'an, he oversaw the reorganisation of al-Azhar into a modern university and was known for his openness between the schools of law. His grave is in the Southern Cemetery below al-Muqattam, a short walk from the tombs of Umm Kulthum and al-Izz ibn Abd al-Salam.
