Imam al-Qasim ibn Firruh al-Shatibi was born in Xativa in al-Andalus in 538 AH and lost his sight as a child. He studied hadith with al-Silafi in Alexandria and taught the Qur'an readings in Cairo, where he wrote the Shatibiyya, the poem on the seven readings that is still memorised by students of Qur'an recitation. He passed away in 590 AH. His mosque and shrine stand in the Qarafa east of Imam al-Shafi'i, and they have been under restoration in recent years.
