The Attarin Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Alexandria, standing on a site that has been a place of worship since before Islam. In 477 AH (1084) the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Jamali rebuilt it as a congregational mosque, and an inscription recording his work is still kept in the building. The present mosque dates from 1901, when it was rebuilt under Khedive Abbas Hilmi II with a tall, finely carved minaret. It stands on Ismail Mahana Street in the Attarin quarter, known for its antiques and second-hand shops, a short walk from the Nabi Daniyal Mosque.
